4 Ways You Can Start Dressing Sustainably

The damaging and dangerous effects of fast fashion are increasingly coming to light, along with the awareness of the consumerism that drives these industries. You may be wondering how to move away from fast fashion and start dressing in a way that is more ethical. I’m definitely guilty of having clicked ‘checkout’ with a few too many fast fashion items in my basket. Maybe you are too, but by starting to dress more sustainably and ethically, we can move away from fast fashion.

This article is for those that are able to start dressing sustainably. It must be recognised that moving away from fast fashion isn’t accessible for everyone and this article is not intended for those who are not in a position to move away from fast fashion garments.

If you can, here’s where to start on your sustainable fashion journey:

1. Wear the clothes you already own

Yes, the first one really is that simple. Instead of purchasing new clothes, just wear the ones you already have. Easier said than done, I know, especially when the latest micro-trend is taking over the internet. But one of the best ways you can dress sustainably is by just wearing the clothes already hanging in your wardrobe.

2. Upcycle your old clothes

It’s finally time for that Textiles GCSE to come in handy — dig out your nan’s old sewing machine and start upcycling your clothes. If old clothes aren’t your style anymore, consider following a YouTube or TikTok tutorial on how to turn an old top into something that you are excited to wear again. Even a simple adjustment can totally transform an item, so give it a try. You might even develop some new skills.

3. Charity shops are your best friend

Here in the UK, we love a good charity shop. From previously loved books to random finds, charity shops have lots of second-hand items to choose from. Why not head down to your local high street in search of some new additions to your wardrobe? You might not like the first thing you spot but keep looking and you could find a piece you absolutely love. By doing this you can continue sustainable fashion practices while also helping your local charity shop! If you can’t get to a charity shop, try second hand online marketplaces to find your new pieces.

4. Buy from sustainable clothing brands

When buying new clothes try switching out fast fashion for sustainable clothing brands. Buy from brands that pay their garment workers a good wage, are transparent about their supply chain and ethically source their materials. While some sustainable fashion brands might not be suitable for everyone’s budget, they are a great way to transition into slow fashion, if you can.

Hopefully, you have found some inspiration in these four different ways of dressing sustainably and can start transitioning from fast fa.
